About Addiction Treatment
Treatment for Chemical and Behavioral Addictions
Are you using alcohol, nicotine or drugs to manage stress, relationships or mental health issues? Has your alcohol, nicotine, drug or other compulsive behaviors become a problem? Are the people in your life worried about your substance use or other behaviors?
If so, we have experience in helping individuals with such problems. With experienced help, people improve behaviors, make effective changes and live healthier, happier lives. We have experience working with both adolescents and adults with substance abuse and other compulsive behavior disorders related to gambling, food and sex.
Addiction is a complex disease which impacts the functioning and structure of the brain. Addiction can be chronic in nature but effectively treated with symptoms and behaviors managed. If not treated, addiction can result in other illnesses and even death. People often struggle with differentiating terms including experimental or recreational use, abuse, dependence and addiction. Addiction is a progressive disease and often analyzing use and/or abuse can be a preventive step in avoiding addiction.
Both adults and adolescents struggle with addiction and many are dually-diagnosed with other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar or post traumatic stress disorder, to name a few. In addition to the physical and mental complexities of these diagnoses, individuals struggling with addiction often feel isolated, ashamed and hopeless. We understand how to holistically treat individuals, addressing these various complexities.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach effective in treating substance use and other compulsive behaviors. Its treatment goals include the reduction of negative emotional reactions and self-defeating behaviors by addressing distorted thinking patterns that underlie using behaviors. We have experience working with CBT in an individual and group setting and often compliment CBT work with EMDR and a family systems approach. We have witnessed how CBT has helped individuals face their problems of emotional distress and gain a more comprehensive perspective on their reliance to alcohol or drugs and relief from uncomfortable or unpleasant feelings in order to develop healthier coping skills for a more fulfilling, healthier and happier lifestyle.
